She looks forward to seeing more entries from FilAm journalists all over the US next year. Entries must have been published in a bona-fide media company. Entry Guidelines and other information can be found at www.papcusa.org/plaridel-awards.

The Plaridel Awards was launched in 2012 to celebrate the work of Filipino American journalists as they chronicle the lives of their kababayans in the US or the communities they live in. Much like Marcelo H. Del Pilar, 19th Century Filipino hero and expat-publisher who pursued his career as a journalist while in exile. The word Plaridel was his nom de plume.

San Jose Native Azenith Smith, KTVU general assignment reporter, was keynote speaker. Consul General Henry S. Bensurto, Jr. also spoke about the synergy between the consulate and the press club- which they so appreciate. Two outstanding leaders in the community were presented the “Torch Bearer Award.” They were former Philippine Tourism Director for the San Francisco North West Area, Rene de los Santos and Rudy Asercion, until recently, executive director of the WestBay Pilipino Multi-Service Center. A posthumous award for “Outstanding Community Service through radio broadcasting” was presented to the widow of Robert Henry, East West Radio Host, who passed away this year.

Prior to the start of the proceedings, Rick Rocamora, acclaimed Filipino Photojournalist, did a presentation on his work to encourage more journalists interested in presenting their coverage with compelling pictures. Emcees for the evening were father-daughter tandem, Ness Caroline Ocampo – host and producer of the Filipino American Network Radio that produced the FilAm Now – FilAm Ngayon.

The 4th Plaridel awards is scheduled for October 8, 2015, a Thursday. Venue to be confirmed.

Congratulations to the Winners, 2015 Plaridel Awardees! If I may suggest to make the Plaridel Awards Credible . . .
    1. Publish the winning major entries, i.e., Feature, Essay, Investigative Reporting. Commentary, and International Reporting Categories…GIVE THE GENERAL PUBLIC THE OPPORTUNITY TO JUDGE AS WELL. It is a public right.
    2. Describe what constitutes each category.. This will distinguish say Investigative Reporting from International Reporting, Essay from Commentary, etc.
    3. Publish the names of the Judges, their qualification, and in what category are they assigned to judge or specialize in . . . i.e., a news reporter cannot be an editorial or feature writing specialist. DESCRIBE HOW ENTRIES ARE JUDGED — PUT PERCENTAGES OF PREFERENCE IN JUDGING IF POSSIBLE.
    4. No Judge is credible unless at least he/she has a fundamental understanding of the rudiments of writings [major categories I am referring to], had written extensively [define extensively] or must have studied and has a degree on Journalism, Philosophy & Letters, publishing and Mass Communication and allied discipline.
    5. The Philippine American Press Club is a Media club — it is an association of pen-pushers, people of the Ink & Quill — it must be run by their kind, not just by people of particular influence or social & political climbers who once invaded the Philippine National Press Club in Manila and destroyed it.
    6. To be credible, The Philippine American Press Club must penetrate community publishing outlets of inner cities throughout the U.S. Limiting it to only 2 or 3 Inquirer-associated publishers that the so-called judges only know as it appears in this report, cannot command respect from the general public. The Gems of the Fireplace in Philippine-American Journalism are in those inner cities where intellectuals of the writing discipline relax and settle in peace unleashing their utmost potentials, not in the hubs of crowded cities where the struggle for survival preempts the survival of the Art.
