2020 PAPC PLARIDEL AWARDS GUIDELINES AND CATEGORIES
Awards will be given to the best written stories and articles that provide unique perspective on the issues and concerns of the Filipino American communities and the community at large.
- Categories for print and online articles include Investigative Story, News Story, Personal Essay, Feature Story, Profile Writing, Commentary or Editorial Essay, International Reporting; Entertainment, Food, and Youth Voice (age 16 – 26.) Special inclusion of Photojournalism and Tourism stories.
- For Broadcast Television – Coverage and Content on the following: Community Reporting/Documentary, Personality Profile, and TV Show/Program.
- For Radio: Complete Community Programming.
ENTRY GUIDELINES
- Entries must have been published/aired between June 1, 2019 to May 31, 2020
- Email all entries to papcplaridel@gmail.com
- Entries must be emailed. No physical copies, please.
- For online published articles / TV broadcasts- just send the link together with ENTRY FORM
- For broadsheet articles – email a photo copy of article page together with the word document/pdf of the article.
- Journalist must do the submission not publisher
- Submissions open June 15, 2020
- Deadline for submissions is August 31, 2020.
- All entries must be emailed. No physical copies, please.
- Entry Fee is $15 per article submission. Payment may be sent through PAYPAL at papcplaridelus@gmail.com
- For multiple entries from one journalist – one set of photo and resume will suffice

SUBMISSION LIMITATIONS:
- There is a maximum limit of two articles per category.
- An article from a series of up to 3 will be considered as One (1) Entry.
- Each journalist can only submit entries to a maximum of three (3) Categories.
- Submissions must come from the journalists themselves and not the media organization.
PLARIDEL AWARDS CATEGORIES
PRINT/ONLINE CATEGORIES
PLARIDEL 1 – BEST INVESTIGATIVE/ IN DEPTH STORY
This award honors in-depth or investigative stories or series that identify and explore issues relevant to Filipinos in America. Judges will consider originality of topic, unique angles, resourcefulness in the pursuit of facts and information and overall impact of story.
PLARIDEL 2 – BEST COMMENTARY/EDITORIAL ESSAY
This award honors the best editorial or commentary by a columnist, editorial writer or independent contributor. Judges will consider originality of viewpoint, quality of writing, and courage of opinion expressed. Editorials should be no longer than 1,500 words in length.
PLARIDEL 3 – BEST NEWS STORY
This award honors the best straight reporting of an issue, an event or an incident that directly affects or is relevant to the Filipino American community. Judges will consider quality and comprehensiveness of reporting and unique angles.
PLARIDEL 4 – BEST PERSONAL ESSAY
This award honors the best First Person essay. Judges will consider quality of writing, unique angles and perspectives, research input, and relevance to the community. Entries should be from 800-1,500 words.
PLARIDEL 5 – BEST FEATURE STORY
This award honors the best feature story with focus on the choice of topic, the quality of writing, research input, unique perspective and relevance to the target market. Entries should not be more than 2,500 words.
PLARIDEL 6 – BEST PROFILE WRITING
This award honors the story with focus on the choice of personality, the quality of writing, research input, unique perspective. Entries should not be more than 2,500 words.
PLARIDEL 7 – BEST INTERNATIONAL REPORTING
This award honors the best reporting on an international issue related to Filipinos or the Philippines. Judges will consider originality of topic, unique angles, depth of analysis, balance, and effectiveness of presentation.
PLARIDEL 8 – BEST ENTERTAINMENT STORY
This award will be given to the best article on the journey or success of Filipinos in the entertainment field in America or the world. Judges will consider originality of topic, unique angles, and freshness of perspective.
PLARIDEL 9 – BEST FOOD STORY
This award will be given to the best article that explores cultural diversity and unique perspectives on Filipino cuisine. Judges will consider originality of topic, unique angles, and freshness of perspective.
PLARIDEL 10 – BEST YOUTH VOICE
This award honors reporting or commentary by young people about their broader communities. Judges will consider the originality of the topic and power of the storytelling. Writers should be between 16-24.
BROADCAST CATEGORIES
PLARIDEL 11 – BEST COMMUNITY REPORTING/DOCUMENTARY IN TELEVISION
This award will honor the exceptional coverage of an issue affecting a local Fil-Am community broadcast on a television program. Judges will consider originality of topic, unique angles, technical excellence, and compelling insight. Judges should be provided a short summary of the show.
PLARIDEL 12 – BEST TELEVISION BROADCAST – PERSONALITY PROFILE
This award will honor the exceptional production of the life and times of an outstanding and inspiring Filipino American. Judges will consider originality of topic, unique angles, technical excellence, and compelling insight. Judges should be provided a short summary of the show.
PLARIDEL 13 – BEST TELEVISION PROGRAM/SHOW/SERIES
Winner of this award must have compelling content, informative and relevant to the culture of the times. Judges will consider originality of topic, unique angles, and technical excellence. Judges should be provided a short summary of the show.
SPECIAL AWARDS
PLARIDEL 14 – PHOTOJOURNALISM AWARD
This award honors the exceptional photography of a significant action or event that has a profound impact on its Fil-Am community readership. Judges will consider the clarity and the artistry of the photograph and how it imparts its message.
PLARIDEL 15 – BEST TOURISM FEATURE STORY OR PHOTOJOURNALISM
This award will be given to the most unique or convincing article on why “It’s more fun in the Philippines.” Judges will consider originality of topic, unique angles, and freshness of perspective.
PLARIDEL 16 – THE OCAMPO/HENRY RADIO/PODCAST AWARD This award will be given to the broadcaster/ Podcaster or radio station with relevant substantial content on Filipino culture, current events, music and or special features.
Judges will consider originality of topic, unique angles, technical excellence, and compelling insight.
Judges will be provided a short summary of the show.
SCORES ARE BASED ON THE FOLLOWING:
WINNERS: Only one Plaridel Awardee per Category except when there’s a tie.
Results are final and unappealable.
